Computer Virus and Worms.

written by Maxx in the blog "Computers & Internet"
Computer Virus and Worms.

When we think of a virus, we at times think of this as something that infects us and can or will mutate in the body and also at times can come back and or be triggered by another virus or infection.

The same thing is true with your computer, In one of my previous post "Computer house cleaning" I mention or hinted, that this is the reason behind starting all over and wiping the HDD completely clean. On the program HOUSEĀ©, He mentions "that if it eats it poops" and from this show you can often times look up the subjects that they discuss there on the web medical related sites and find that most of the subjects are spot on.

Now with Computer infections you may also find related material on those infections and or symptoms. What I'm getting at in short is that if your Computers has been infect with a virus previously, that there are new worms coming out that hide inside or infect that old virus. and just like the human body the Computer virus can lay dormant and be trigger by something introduced at a later time or right off.

To read more about this type issue I will post a list shortly with places to read up on such things I've mention above!
And some of them can destroy your computer! along with your valued information, not mention you private passwords and bank info along with it!

Theme or mod?

written by Bloc in the blog "BlocBlog"
In a recent discussion I came to think some about where the premium themes are headed, as I add features into them that also could be useful in other themes than BW themes. The menu editor for example, or the HTML input areas. One obstacle is that the menu editor is based on a custom template-menu() function..that would be hard to mod into custom themes, especially if they use their own special HTML code. One of the reasons I made it into bw themes only is that the code doesn't really change anything, it just builds on top of the menu items. A mod would have to the "final" say on what goes to the theme, so any theme works.

But that can be done, I am sure of that.

Next question is then..if I add these to a mod, and add for example panel options(which I have plans for) , what difference is it then between this mod and a portal mod? Would it be better to just..create a light portal mod with these features?

My concern is that premium themes then loose some of their purpose..that might not be a bad thing either, but I am not sure. Are people ready for a free "bw features + portal" mod? or do they want still premium themes with same features?

Any comments on this are welcome.

Database Collations

written by Skhilled in the blog "Computers & Internet"
Does anyone know if having mixed table collations can cause problems with SMF? I have a few old forums and the one that has always given me problems has mixed table collations.

I am also helping someone fix the problems on their site. I was leaning toward hosting issues, which the hosting is not very good, but noticed they also have mixed collations.

Ubuntu has announced a change to their version of Linux that ought to get hot key junkies and voice control enthusiasts alike to raise their heads with glee.

Ubuntu 12.04 will introduce a new Heads-Up Display for interacting with the operating system in April, wrote Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth. The HUD will allow you to "express your intent" with the operating system and the programs running on it, wrote Shuttleworth.

Currently, it's activated by hitting the Alt key, which opens a translucent box into which you can speak or type your commands. As you start to type the word Firefox, for example, the predictive menu will pull up launching Firefox as an option.
